The 5am Advantage: A Full Workday, Done by Early Afternoon

Every coworking space in Sydney will tell you about their hours. Ours close at 3pm on weekdays, and we've always been upfront that this is the trade that makes a $429 membership possible - the rooms go back to being tutoring classrooms in the afternoon.

What we talk about less is the other end of the day. The doors open at 5am, and the members who use that hour are the most productive people we've ever shared a building with.

The maths of an early day

Start at 6am and finish at 2:30pm and you've done a full eight-hour day - with the entire afternoon still in front of you. Start at 7am and you're still done by mid-afternoon. The 10-hour weekday window (5am to 3pm) holds more working hours than most people ever actually work in a day.

The early hours are also simply better hours. No meetings, no messages, no one else on the road. Members tell us the block before 9am is worth two of the blocks after it, and the research on deep work agrees with them.

Nobody to let you in - by design

There's no reception desk and no staff member yawning at the door at 5am. You get a personal door PIN at your induction and let yourself in. The lights are on, the aircon is running, your monitor is waiting.

Who the early shift suits

• Anyone working European or US hours. 5am in Sydney is late afternoon in London and prime time on the US East Coast. The overlap happens before breakfast, not at midnight.
• Natural early risers who've been tiptoeing around a sleeping household with nowhere to go.
• Surfers and swimmers - in early, done by two, in the water while the rest of Sydney is still in meetings.

And when the week isn't enough, the spaces are open all day Sunday.
