Working for Yourself in Sydney: An Expat's Guide to the Northern Beaches

Here's something we didn't expect when we opened: the biggest group of members through our doors hasn't been locals escaping the commute. It's been people who just moved here - from the UK, Ireland, Europe, South America - working local jobs, freelancing, or carrying a remote role across timezones.

It makes sense in hindsight. If you grew up here, you probably have a home office, or at least a spare room. If you landed three weeks ago, you have a rental with no study, flatmates who aren't colleagues, and a kitchen bench that was never meant to be a desk.

The paperwork problem (and why coworking sidesteps it)

Nearly everything about setting up in Sydney wants a paper trail you don't have yet: rental history, local references, an Australian credit file. A coworking membership is one of the few things that doesn't. At our spaces there's no credit check and no minimum term - you enquire, we call you, and you're set up at an in-person induction. A passport is fine as ID.

Everything runs month to month. Staying six weeks? Fine. Staying two years? Also fine. If you move suburbs - and most new arrivals do, at least once - your membership moves with you across all five locations.

Working a foreign timezone from the Beaches

If your work points at Europe or the Americas, the standard 9-5 office is the wrong shape for your day. Our doors open at 5am on weekdays, which covers the late-afternoon overlap with London and the morning overlap with the US East Coast - and the spaces are open all day Sunday when your Monday-morning team is already at work.

What it costs to have a real desk

Monthly membership is $429 - about $19.50 per working day - with a 27" monitor, fast WiFi and free parking at every location, and your first two weeks are free with nothing charged until they end. If your plans are genuinely week-to-week, a casual 5-visit pack is $225 and lasts six months.

If you're starting a business here, there's one more piece of paper worth knowing about: you'll need an Australian address for ABN and ASIC registration, and a share-house lease usually isn't the one you want on the public record. We offer virtual office arrangements for exactly this.

The lifestyle is why you came. The desk is how you keep it. Start here if you're new to Sydney - or just enquire and we'll talk it through on the phone.
